Agreement among blockchain Nodes that a transaction has been validated and that the blockchain contains a consistent set and ordering of records of validated transactions. Consensus does not necessarily require agreement by all nodes. There are different types of consensus mechanisms. Depending on the design of the blockchain system, consensus may be probabilistic or eventual rather than absolute or permanent, and competing versions of the chain may temporarily or persistently arise, for example through Forks.
